Even though I never met Nelson Mandela, I felt the impact of his work. While visiting Cape Town, South Africa I was lucky enough to befriend a cab driver named Henry. He identified himself as "coloured", blue eyes, fair skinned and black curly hair. One day when he was driving me to the newspaper where I was interning at he told me about when his 80-plus year old father went to vote for the first time. Although they had to wait in line for over two hours, his father refused to leave. He said the look of pride on his father's face when he cast his vote was unforgettable. His story is just one out of an entire nation.
May Nelson Mandela's legacy live on.
